Why Circular Saw Safety Matters
About 10,600 emergency room visits are caused by improper use of circular saws every year. However, most injuries are preventable with safe practices, the right PPE, and staying alert.
Safety Guidelines
Before You Start
- Wear PPE: Always wear safety glasses and hearing protection.
- Dress for Safety: Tie back long hair, avoid loose clothing, and remove jewelry.
- Inspect the Saw: Never use a saw with a damaged or altered guard. Make sure the blade guard moves freely.
- Blade Check: Use sharp blades only. Unplug the saw before changing blades.
- Set Blade Depth: Adjust the blade to be 1/8″ deeper than the material.
- Stable Surface: Prepare a steady, flat surface to cut—never cut on your knee.
During the Cut
- Two-Handed Operation: Hold the saw with both hands—one on the saw, one stabilizing the material.
- Cut Safely: Cut shorter pieces from longer boards first. Stand to the side of the saw to avoid kickback.
- Support Panels: Support large panels to prevent blade pinching.
- Work Area: Keep cords clear and the area free of debris to prevent trips.
- Don’t Twist: Never twist the saw to change direction unless the blade is designed for it.
- Do Not Carry by the Trigger: Never carry the saw with your hand or fingers on the trigger.
Finishing Up
- Wait Until Stopped: Let the blade stop before setting the saw down.
- After the Cut: Only set the saw down after the blade comes to a complete stop.
Other Important Reminders
- Blade Removal: Never remove the blade from the material while it’s still spinning.
- Watch for Knots/Sap: Be alert for knots or sap in wood that could cause kickback.
- Blade Guard: Never bypass, modify, or remove the blade guard.
